KakaoTalk Open Chat bot
Virtual nation bot for open chat
A game-style manager bot that runs a chat room like a small country.
Project notes
Introduction
A game-style manager bot that runs a KakaoTalk open chat room like a small country. It runs in the Android app MessengerBot R on a spare phone, with the bot's account kept in the room. The phone stays on, plugged into a charger.
Purpose
Run a room's citizenship, money, attendance, polls and elections, each with a single command.
Main features
- Citizen registration, ID cards and the citizen list
- Balances, transfers, a daily salary by office, and a wealth ranking
- Attendance rewards and today's attendance
- Country info, a constitution, notices and the list of offices
- Polls, and elections that appoint the winner to office automatically when they close
- The bot keeps the record of balances and poll results.
- Each office carries permissions, and the help list shows only the commands you are allowed to use.
- An optional summary of the chat since you last spoke (only with an OpenAI key)
Technology
- MessengerBot R
- Android app that answers KakaoTalk notifications (legacy API)
- JavaScript
- A single bot.js; CONFIG at the top sets the country name, offices, permissions and salaries
- OpenAI API
- Chat summary (optional)
- simulator.html
- A page for trying the bot in a PC browser without KakaoTalk
- Node.js tests
- npm test
How it was made
- Built the bot, its tests and a PC simulator.
- Added a compact build that is easier to paste into MessengerBot R, and fixed wording.
- Shortened the help lines so they don't wrap mid-command on phones.
Problems and fixes
- Fixed
Problem: On phones, help lines wrapped in the middle of a command.
How it was fixed Each help line was shortened.
- Fixed
Problem: With the summary on, the room's messages go to an outside AI service.
How it was fixed Without an API key the summary stays off, and the guide says to tell members in a room notice before turning it on.
- Platform limit
Problem: KakaoTalk does not officially support this kind of bot, so the bot's account can be restricted.
How it was fixed The guide insists on a separate account just for the bot.
- Platform limit
Problem: Records follow nicknames, so a changed nickname counts as a new person.
How it was fixed The setup guide states this up front.
Result
A phone recording (0:16) shows the citizen registration and balance commands working in a test open chat room.

- Simulation
Virtual nation bot for open chat
A simulation that runs the bot's real code (bot.js) inside this page. It is not connected to KakaoTalk; switch the sender and move the date to try it. Everything resets on reload. The AI chat summary is switched off, because it would send the messages to an outside service.
Open the simulation (Virtual nation bot for open chat, opens in a new tab)
- Demo video
Demo video 0:16, no sound
The screens in these demos are in Korean.
My part and AI tools
What I did myself
- Ran the bot in a real KakaoTalk test room and recorded the demo.
Where AI tools were used
- Bot code, tests, simulator and setup guide were made with an AI coding tool (Claude), per the repository history of 2026-10-03.
